One of the godfathers of sports logo sweats, Champion Sportswear, are gearing up for a UK relaunch. Established in New York in 1919, they’ve uniformed professional athletes, and been a go-to amongst the music and fashion circles throughout the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Jay-Z, 50 and Ricky Rozay are amongst the many who loyally sport their iconic cotton sweats, all embroidered with their signature “C.”
And it was for labourers in cold-ass upstate NY warehouses that the first ever hoodie was invented by Champion in 1930. They are also responsible for the first athletics sports bra, which has since been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
SS15 sees Champion stocked in the UK for the first time over 10 years. The collection revisits the Reverse Weave—the first technological innovation in the world of athletic apparel in which the fabric is constructed in a way to avoid vertical shrinkage and minimum stretching. Building on the brand’s nostalgic heritage are premium sweatshirts, button downs, and sweatpants in iconic athletic colours and seasonal patterns including camo.
After acclaimed collaborations with brands like Supreme, Wood Wood, Herschel, Todd Snyder, and more, Champion is experiencing a renaissance. Proving a response to the current generation’s obsession with iconic and heritage sportswear, thanks to the timeless designs and quality fabrics.
So for those like me that are suckers for vintage sportswear, you can ease up on the late-night eBay trawl. Plus, if it’s good enough for Jay, it’s good enough for me.
