‘They’ve always had a classy yet casual look to them, so I thought how can I add that metal face touch to it without taking away from that feel?’
This was the M.O. of DOOM who, as an Originals Pioneer, was tasked with co-creating a new version of his favourite Clarks Originals shoe. He chose the Wallabee, a shoe that boasts a long heritage with hip-hop, and teamed up with Lex Records in late 2012 to begin work on the design.
Butter soft grained brown leather has been used for the upper and folded over at the heel, the stitching on the toe is made from a special light reflective 3M material which is repeated throughout the brown striped laces. The lining is a custom repeat mask pattern material in cream and grey with each mask containing the red ruby. The insole is embossed with a genuine DOOM signature and the back of the heel is embossed with the iconic DOOM mask.
The shoebox itself was also designed by Lex and DOOM and features a mask emboss across the top, DOOM’s official throw on the sides and a custom Haiku written by the rapper.
To accompany the shoe, DOOM travelled to the home of Clarks to capture the sounds of the street. Working with his field recordings, he has prepared an exclusive track remix and video that will be launched in March.
The Wallabees will be available to pre-order from the Lex shop in mid January and released worldwide on the 14th February 2014. Check out the promotional trailer below and read our interview with DOOM here.
