Icons of Hip-Hop: Eddie Otchere’s timeless archive

Describing himself as a “fan boy,” Londoner, Eddie Otchere immersed himself in early hip-hop culture, photographing principal pioneers of rap during the 1990s and early noughties. Over the years he’s taken portraits of Biggie Smalls, Blackstar, Nas, Cypress Hill, Outkast amongst many others. He puts his impressive catalogue of rappers down to; “Keeping your ear to the ground, chasing people down the street and like Pokémon cards, just collecting your favorite MCs.”

Otchere began digitalizing his archive ten years ago, enabling him to view his photographs and contact sheets in a whole different light and now he’s sharing them with us! This Greedy Pig and Hen’s Teeth Prints have teamed up to showcase Eddie’s works which includes previously unseen images of Nas.

You can see at the exhibition in the flesh till the 31st August at The Bernard Shaw, Dublin. Alternatively, all the prints are available to view and buy on Hen’s Teeth Print website.

Here’s a short film made to accompany the exhibition which gives you the inside scoop:
