Introducing: Brother Portrait

In November we came across Hadiru Mahdi aka brother portrait for the first time with his video for Seeview/Rearview. Directed by Nadira Amrani, the song is a poetic exploration of the sounds and surroundings that have come to define the dual nature of his Sierra Leonean and British heritage.

Cutting his teeth as one third of alternative hip-hop group Black Other, he joins the likes of Kojey Radical, George the Poet and Obongjayar in London’s booming spoken word scene.

His debut EP navigate in:limbo builds on the themes raised on Seeview/Rearview, as we see Mahdi continuing to explore the narrative of black British culture, with a sonic style that takes as much from Ishmael Butler’s afrofuturist stylings as it does from Mike Skinner’s inner city poetry. Have a listen to it below.
