Highly educated, clearly motivated and extremely talented, Nabihah Iqbal, (formerly known as Throwing Shade) has completed her latest project. Having graduated from both SOAS and Cambridge, worked in human rights law and put out several releases since 2013, she’s now crafted a Ninja-worthy full-length. Impressive.
As she embraces her given name and position as a British Asian, female producer, Iqbal’s latest offering; Weighting of the Heart, explores the Ancient Egyptian myth about judgement and the afterlife. Carrying these themes throughout, the album demonstrates her dexterity; a master of many instruments as well as singer and producer. The product is modern synth pop where free-flowing, self directed recording sessions have lead her to actively acknowledge the breadth of her influences and fine tune them into an LP.
The first single, Something More, is best explained by Iqbal herself: “it’s a song about a universal feeling that everyone shares… It’s about how true happiness and freedom only exist in the dimension of our fantasies, dreams and private thoughts. The reality of our physical existence constantly leaves us dissatisfied, frustrated and yearning for ‘something more’, even though we’ll never find a way to remedy these feelings”.
Weighting of the Heart is out on Ninja Tune on December 1st, we suggest you pre-order it here
