Telemachus x Bonafide Beats #40

Telemachus is the alias of London based producer Chemo, a central figure in the UK hip-hop scene, he has produced for the likes of Kyza, Kashmere and Verb T at his own Kilamanjaro studios, while recently signing to Jehst’s YNR label. ‘Telemachus’ is a figure from Greek mythology – and a central character in Homer’s Odyssey, – said to be the second oldest book in modern history (and you thought that Banksy book was old) – and a name that translates as “far from battle”.

This hints at the cathartic musical direction Telemachus adopts not just in his new album – In The Evening, featuring the likes of Roc Marciano, Jehst and Jah Mirikle among others – which encompasses Indian strings, West African highlife and hip-hop, of course, in a shamanic journey (through a desert) record, but also in his mix for Bonafide.

Eschewing big names, perhaps unsurprisingly, Telemachus’ largely instrumental mix is ethereal, warm, melancholic and at times set with tongue firmly in cheek – check the opening skit with reference to the review section in our very own pages – for a refreshing take on the UK hip-hop sound.

In The Evening is out now on YNR and you can follow Telemachus on Twitter and Facebook.
