The internet can be a daunting place at the best of times, and when it comes to music there’s a never ending rabbit hole of mixes, remixes, tracks, mixtapes and videos being uploaded on the daily. It’s physically impossible to be able to digest everything that is throw into the public consciousness, so we’ve taken time out to handpick the six freshest beats we’ve heard this week to make your life a bit easier. Kick back and enjoy them over the weekend.
Kirkis – Cold Crush (Mndsgn Remix)
Have you ever remixed a remix of your own song? Well, Mndsgn has. The Stones Throw producer was asked to rework Kirkis’ Cold Crush, who himself had already given Mndsgn’s own original, kikhabits, a go himself. The one here moves at such a slow pace that it moves you into a headspace where it feels like you’ve been sitting in front of the TV all day eating pizza and smoking fat ones.
Tinashe – Ride Of Your Life
R’n’b’s next lady in waiting, you get the feeling that this is Tinashe’s year. With her credibility already approved by the hipsters, she can now go full throttle towards challenging Bey for the slot at the top of the tree. Ride Of Your Life, from the forthcoming Joyride, features Metro Boomin on the buttons and is pure Tinashe – sultry, sexy and confident.
DanielOG – Plan
Championed by none other than Skepta, DanielOG is kind of like the grime equivalent to iLoveMakonnen. A charming kid with a style that is too wavey for his own good (just check that Art Attack sweatshirt), he brags about a ‘plan’ that will mean that ‘one day my favourite brands will have to give me clothes’ and backs himself by saying ‘I’ve done my research, check my tabs’. A simple, but very infectious message.
Champion + Four Tet – Disparate
The man with seemingly a thousand strings to his bow, Kieran Hebden has formed quite the tag team with instrumental grime producer Champion. From remixing Hebden’s Kool FM to collaborating on Flip Side, the duo return with Disparate, another gleeful bass romp complete with shuddering funky drumwork and the trademark Four Tet vocal sample.
Earl Sweatshirt – Wind In My Sails
The ever-elusive Thebe Kgositsile (Earl Sweatshirt) dropped three new tracks last week including two instrumentals and a new pick in which he raps, the mellow Wind In My Sails accompanying Captain Murphy in sampling Thomas East’s 1969 single with True Soul, Slippin’ Around. It comes after the announcement a few months ago that Earl wants to release a new project under a new name. Now we wait…
Baauer – Day Ones ft Novelist & Leikeli47
This is monumental. At the start of Novelist’s 1 Sec, there’s a voice that says ‘it started in a small club, and now it’s in a big club. So obviously the movement is working’. Well, here we are, the cross pollenation is complete. The UK’s second biggest grime export after Skepta has teamed up with boisterous trap man of the hour Baauer for the colossal Day Ones, part of the producer’s debut album Aa, out next month on LuckyMe.
