The internet can be a daunting place at the best of times, and when it comes to music there’s a never ending rabbit hole of mixes, remixes, tracks, mixtapes and videos being uploaded on the daily. It’s physically impossible to be able to digest everything that is throw into the public consciousness, so we’ve taken time out to handpick the six freshest beats we’ve heard this week to make your life a bit easier. Kick back and enjoy them over the weekend. Here is the Week In Beats.
Ibibio Sound Machine – Give Me a Reason
One of afrobeat’s freshest bands, Ibibio Sound Machine transcend the genre by injecting their sound with funk and disco influences. Give Me a Reason is taken from the album Uyai released next month, and to celebrate it they will be playing at London’s Jazz Cafe at the end of March.
Avelino (feat. Stormzy & Skepta) – Energy
Avelino was always set for a massive 2017, and Energy is his first step on the path to world domination. Enlisting Stormzy and Skepta on a track obviously comes with its drawbacks – it clearly speaks of Av’s confidence that he’s not afraid to be overshadowed by the two titans. If anything, he shows them up.
Paul White ft Danny Brown – Accelerator
Paul White and Danny Brown are two of our favourites at Bonafide, and whenever we see their names paired together it always gets us a bit giddy. The perfect foil for Brown’s reckless abandon, Brown gleefully gives the Detroit rapper a beat that couldn’t be further removed from hip-hop on Accelerator, but he still rides it with ease.
Jidenna – The Let Out ft. Nana Kwabena
Classic Man was just meant to be a one hit wonder… right? But here we see Jidenna back in our faces with The Let Out. The beat, the voice, the delivery for better or worse sounds pretty similar to Classic Man, or maybe that’s just an easy comparison to make because of how ubiquitous the song became. Either way, The Let Out surprisingly bangs.
Mndsgn – GOTEEM!
Here we see the Stones Throw producer as we’ve never seen him before. Known more for blissed out and drugged up mellow beats, here he dons his disco hat for an uptempo funk filled effort, GOTEEM!. It may not be what we’re used to hearing from him but predictably he still kills is.
BJ The Chicago Kid – Roses
When V Day comes around you’re pretty much guaranteed to have an influx of one off ‘love’ themed songs peddled by a clutch of r’n’b artists. The end product always varies wildly in quality, but BJ’s offering Roses keeps it pretty straight and simple – in an era of Jeremih and Mike Will Made It ruling the charts, he lets his voice do most of the talking.
