Words: [Vivian Glass]
In a turbulent summer for live music, the UK’s festival landscape finds itself at a crossroads. While corporate buyouts continue reshaping the industry — with private equity giants like KKR quietly expanding their influence in the scene — questions are rising around creative control, cultural authenticity and artist equity.
The result? An increasingly two-tiered world of festivals: the algorithm-fed mega-raves, and the homegrown, community-rooted experiences that still hold space for musical risk-taking and grassroots energy. As headlines swirl about hedge funds profiting from what was once countercultural space, it’s never been more important to support independent festivals — not just for what they programme, but for how they operate. These are the ones still run by music lovers, not shareholders.
Here’s Bonafide’s handpicked guide to the best indie and underground festivals this summer. No sponsored VIP lounges, no mainstage monotony — just soul, sweat, and scenes built from the ground up.
