Introducing: Ezra Collective

The latest bright sparks to emerge in the capital’s buzzing jazz scene are Ezra Collective.

Along with Yussef Kamaal, Moses Boyd, Shabaka Hutchings et al, Ezra really made a name for themselves last year after doing their thing on Boiler Room recently (watch below) and with the release of their excellent EP Chapter 7 on Bandcamp in September.

With performances scheduled at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards at KOKO later this month and playing as Pharoahe Monch’s backing band at Bonafide’s show at the Jazz Cafe on Friday, you get the sense that things are only just getting started for these boys.

With excellent bandleader Femi Koleoso on drums and the formidable Joe Armon-Jones on keys (he also plays with Sumochief and Ata Kak), there’s a seasoned backbone to the band which is both refreshing and invigorating to watch.
