Ghanaian-born, Berlin-based artist Selassie drops a video to accompany new single Yiddy, taken from his forthcoming EP RETRO FUTURE KIDS.
Warmly sparse beats produced by Roadrunners provide a bed for Selassie’s poetic, nonchalant flow, joined by Berlin MC Anthony Willis.
Most of the young black men making it are in entertainment and sports culture. We all wanted to be like Diddy at some point from where I come from. Somehow, those people showcased the idea that all our dreams could come true.
This song is a homage to all the people around me, in reality doing their day to day dream motivating and inspiring us in community to continue.
At the end it’s really about respecting the idea of creativity, honouring our day to day achievements.
Selassie
Becoming a father has changed Selassie’s perspective on life, with RETRO FUTURE KID telling a tale of self acceptance and responsibility.
He explains: ‘It’s about a kid growing out of a dark place. Someone who just started learning how to be proud of his lil achievements in life. Seeing myself in my two year old daughter, a work on my inner child. This EP was created between her birth and her second birthday.”
