Watch: new trailer for N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton

The much-anticipated N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton just released its first trailer.

At no better time, too, with last year’s amounting sociopolitical unrest in parts of America and beyond. As Ice Cube, co-producer of the film notes, “The same thing we were going through with the police in the ’80s these people are going through now.” Him and Dr. Dre, the other co-producer, introduces the film by driving around this infamous California city “where it all started.” Kendrick makes a cameo, saying, “When I think of N.W.A, it weren’t really music to me. It was more like a real lifestyle of brothers from my neighbourhood that made it out.”

The clip shows a young Dre (played by Marcus Callender) fighting with his mum, Cube (played by his son O’Shea Jackson Jr.) writing rhymes on the back of a bus, Eazy E (Jason Mitchell) spitting the first lines to Boyz N Tha Hood, and the groups’s eventual rise to fame with the help of manager Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti). It then goes on to show the drama surrounding N.W.A.’s inevitable conflict with federal government, as the Rodney King riots unfold and “Fuck Tha Police” permeated the streets. Check it below.

Straight Outta Compton is out August 14th, 2015.
